Fitzgerald fights to save iconic Traralgon Post Office
Liberal candidate for Gippsland Rohan Fitzgerald is leading the fight to keep the heritage-listed Traralgon Post Office at its present site in Franklin Street.
Australia Post has recently proposed the relocation of its iconic service from the heritage-listed building to Church Street, which is not serviced by public transport.
The move would substantially disadvantage Traralgon’s seniors. The current site is centrally located, adjoins existing public transport routes and is accessible to all, particularly for senior residents who use the bill payment and parcel services.
Rohan met with a representative of Australia Post today and urged Australia Post not to disadvantage Traralgon residents by moving the post office from its current site.
“The post office on Franklin St is ideally located,” said Rohan.
“Many seniors – some of whom will not be able to walk to another site – will find it difficult if the Post Office ups stumps and moves across town to the Church Street site. I am very concerned that Australia Post’s move will make life harder for some of our residents.
“Australia Post has an iconic place in the social fabric of the community and it must honour its social obligation to the people of Traralgon. After all, we are talking about a government-run business whose focus is not only on the bottom line but on the people it serves.
“I want to ensure we have the best local services possible and I will fight hard to maintain existing Franklin Street services. The current location works for Traralgon residents so there is no need to move it.
“I have told Australia Post in no uncertain terms that the residents of Traralgon deserve better. I have also told them that I am committed to seeing the service remain as accessible as possible to the residents who use it, and as close as possible to public transport.
“Australia Post’s preferred site does not have public transport services running passed it.
“The heritage site is an icon and should remain a focal point for our community.”
