Labor must stop dragging its heels
and call Gippsland by-election
Gippsland Liberal candidate Rohan Fitzgerald today demanded the Federal Labor Government immediately call the by-election for the seat of Gippsland, which was vacated by Peter McGauran almost three weeks ago.
“The by-election must be called so that representation is returned to the people of Gippsland, and the Labor Government’s failure to do so is treating Gippslanders with contempt,” said Rohan.
“Every day the Labor Government holds out is fuelling uncertainty in our local communities and cheating people of representation in the Federal Parliament.
“Labor’s decision to not call the by-election shows a complete disregard for the people of Gippsland.
“There is no good reason why the by-election has not already been called. The former member resigned almost three weeks ago and candidates have now been endorsed by all major parties.
“From the poor state of local roads and bridges, to job security and the burden of rising living costs, to rural health issues and access to GPs – there are so many local issues that need local representation to be addressed in Canberra.
“I’m calling on the Labor Government to immediately call the by-election and name the date. There is no excuse for continuing to deny the people of Gippsland the representation they are entitled.”
